- Of course an annual deductible of say five or ten thousand dollars is not a perfect system, but it may be an acceptable starting point
- Daughter had a six-month period where she had no employer- or parent-provided health insurance, so she took out one of those "catastrophic" health plans for the interim period: high high deductible, but it covered at least the possibility that she suddenly had (say) $80,000-$100,000 for a heart attack or cancer or crippling back injury, etc.
- For an individual to have $5,000 or $6,000 in uninsured unreimbursable medical expenses to work off is a whole lot different from having an $80K bill to work off.
- "The perfect is sometimes the enemy of the good." If it takes compromising on a high deductible to get us STARTED on the pathway to universal insurance, then so be it. Right now, we are going NOWHERE on that path.
