Bill Burton, a spokesman for Senator Barack Obama, has already put a bit of a damper on a 3 p.m. conference call today in which Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign is expected to announce it raised $35 million in February.
"We have raised considerably more than that," said Mr. Burton, who declined to cite an exact number. "We're pretty encouraged."
The $35 million, of course, would represent Mrs. Clinton's best fundraising month yet by far, but still falls short of Mr. Obama's record-breaking $36 million haul last month.
Something to watch closely, however, is how much of both candidates' totals for the month are for the primary and the general election.
Many of Mrs. Clinton's donors have already given the maximum allowed in contributions for the primary. In contrast, Mr. Obama's take last month was driven overwhelmingly by small online donors who could be tapped for more.
