Ok what elitist rock did you climb from under? I imagine that you have
never actually worked in a factory... but you certainly seem to have a
formed opinion of labor. Most low scale, and I use this term very
loosely because factory labor is not easy despite what the ouch I
chipped a nail crowd might think, pays around 7 to 9 an hour. Thats
before they take out for health care which is usually about 20 a week
for individual coverage. Average take home after taxes is often around
1000 a month maybe 1200. These people are happy to work, but what do
they want in return. A stable workplace. Its funny you mention
teachers. Teachers LEAVE their jobs voluntarily. Factories workers and
other laborers get their hours CUT. Teachers also don't have to put in
mandatory overtime, and I am sorry but grading papers at home is not
the same thing. Lets talk about time off... factory worker gets hurt
on the job and looses four days of work. How much comp time does he
get. By law NONE. He wasn't out for a week. If a full time worker gets
his hours cut below full time he can loose his insurance benefits.
Quick question... how much does average FAMILY insurance cost a
factory worker? Answer... no need to answer because they can't afford
it anyways.

So why is this important to the "ouch I chipped a nail- take my SUV to
wal-mart crowd"? Why not export all our manufacturing jobs, and let
those guys who used to have it "made" in the factories load up our
SUV's that now have automatic hinges so we don't have to get in and
out of our cars. The answer is simple. The strength of this nation
lies in manufacturing. The idea that we can forever support ourselves
with massive trade deficits is stupid. The collapse of a service based
economy is inevitable.

It does all come down to choices. I have not shopped at Wal-Mart for
four years now. I know the first name of most of the employees that
work at the grocery store I go to and they know mine (and my family).
My clothes are made in American union shops, or I buy second hand. I
shop conscious of the impact my decisions make on the world around me.
I can guarantee you I am no better than the woman who works in the
factory or the guy who grinds the meat in the butcher shop. It is
elitism that drags this country down, and I am saddened by the fact
that anyone thinks they are better than the woman working second shift
at the tile factory who is keeping beans on her table. I am saddened
mostly because what a miserable existence it must be to see the world
around you oriented by class and misconception.
