a candidate are (i) his race and (ii) her gender.

But I would not this year over-state the race hurdle to an election of
Obama: I have just plain PERSONALLY heard (to my surprise) too many
conservatives say they will vote for Obama rather than the Republican
this year.

What may be the biggest CHANGE in this election cycle is not so much the
candidates as THE VOTER. For years now, I've heard conservative GOP
friends tell me that they and their elderly parents are aghast at Bush,
his war, and his incompetence. This may be another 1976, wehn the
people were sooooooo fed-up with Nixon/Ford that they elected a largely
unknown and untested peanut farmer.
