The denigration of women and any minority that is not accorded equal status and dignity is (in my view) all about CONTROL.
The bigots want to monopolize the terms -- e.g. marriage -- so they can marginalize those who are different. It's all about control: masters controlled slaves, then Jim Crow controlled blacks, then men controlled women, then straights controlled gays/lesbians, then nativists control immigrants, etc., etc. etc.
What we learn from history is that we do not learn from history. But let's not call denigration and marginalization of the group that lacks the relative power by a name other than what it is.
Those with the position to control trade on the fears of those who fear anything different from themselves. The only thing that changes is the setting and the target group, but it's all about control.
