a coke. RC Cola... Moon Pie. I have pounded a minister, and had my
feet washed in church. I have et free watermelon, and I like my Polk
salat with eggs. I won't eat Souse meat, which foreigners called head
cheese. I eat the tail, suck the head. And if you want to see me mad
break out in Rocky Top. So I would say I am southern as anyone here.
My people are from the south, but my mother's family
> came here from Italy, and they were treated horribly

Sorry but it doesn't compare by a long shot. I know the history of the
Italian community in the south very well... and if you are trying to
make a comparison... no... doesn't wash. To put it very simply
Italians were not subject to Jim Crow laws. For instance they Were not
forced to drink at separate water fountains. I would say, you have
never been forced to go to an "italian" bathroom.
My father's family never owned slaves or

Some of the things that have been said are pretty telling. "Why did
they allow their country to be overrun in the first place." I was not
sure if you were talking about South Africa or all of Africa, but the
implications are a little strange... especially considering the
justification for slavery which was used by Locke which was adopted in
the South. This along side "Why are there so many problems in Africa
with them killing each other now?" The problems with this statement is
that you appear to be categorizing an entire continent with a broad
brush. It may not be racism but it is certainly stereotyping. You
follow this with the candid "I don't know what the problem is, but I
know you can't blame white people for everything." As if colonialism
or neocolonialism has nothing to do with any of the worlds problems,
so that any blame applied historically is an affront to you
personally. Why? Because you are white. Your attitude is divisive to
begin with.
Democrats in the media say they
> want a conversation about race, but that's bullshit,
> they want everybody to agree with their idea of how it
> is. Race, as in all other things, is a complex issue,

Thats part of the conversation. Yes it is a complex issue, but being
dismissive of the history of racism in the south or failing to
recognize its impact is advocating a blind ignorance that has warped
souther politics for too long... and yes as Southerners IN THE
SOUTH... we HAVE to be aware of the impact that racism has had upon
both white and black southerners. Racism has hurt poor white
southerners more than it has blacks. Poor white southerners have been
and continue to be manipulated by anti union forces which have
effectively prevented poor blacks and whites from seeking common ground.
Mississippi has gone through a
> hell of its own making, but because of that I think we
> probably are more honest with each other and get along
> better here than whites and blacks do in the north.
Because of its racist past Mississippians get along better? If you are
proud of Mississippi and race relations I can show you some
statistics. Southerners patting ourselves on the back for how tolerant
and wonderful we are makes me sick. Before we get so proud lets fix
whats wrong in our own back yard. That cry of southern whites and
blacks get along better has a long and dark history, the actual
original sentiment had to do with we know how to handle ours. Not a
thought process we should as southerners be so willingly proud of
ourselves. If you are a true southern girl on such issues we need to
be humble (for you yankees there the "H" is silent).
I
> never realized how much prejudice exists in the north
> until now and it goes both ways. I really don't think
> there are any Rev. Wrights in churches here.
You don't mix freely with blacks then. By freely I mean where you are
accepted and YOU are in the minority and you keep your mouth shut and
listen.
There
> are black ladies at my church who adore Bill Clinton
> and would fight you for saying anything bad about him
> and my priest has an Obama bumper sticker on his
> hybrid car. If people really want to talk about race
> then let's talk, but there are trashy criminal people

Yeah I guess all those dirt poor run down schools... (here in Memphis
our inner city schools got central air in 1999)... the lack of
infrastructure. The suburban inner city divide is all those peoples
fault. The fact is you can live anywhere in the south you can afford.
The same is not true for African Americans. Banks here in the South in
places celebrate Robert E Lees birthday, and you know that. I have
heard the statement that in a new subdivision they could not allow
blacks to move in first, otherwise it would be marked a "black"
subdivision. You know as well as I do that the majority of white
people would not want to allow their daughter to marry a black man...
let alone of the inconceivable reverse. (before you start telling me
that black people don't want intermarriage either... we are talking
about our OWN house) I am sure you have heard the phrase "freedom of
association"... if your a Southerner and that doesn't make you wince
then I don't know what would. And thats just part of the divide, lets
not even get into the Old Miss / Mississippi State divide. As strong
as that is its nothing compared to the divide over race. You know as
well I, that until recent (last 10 years... and maybe even still)
there are places a black man did not go. Have you ever heard the
phrase HNIC? So please do not tell me how tolerant and wonderful it
all is. Please do not tell me how we are one happy family filled with
the light of equality here in the south... cause hon it just ain't so
