civil rights movement and what America owes the Black American
community I suggest two books.
Jericho Road
Carry Me Home: Birmingham, Alabama
Especially the second book which was written by a woman who was part
of the upper class of Birmingham, and who has first hand accounts of
corporations fanning racial tensions to prevent unionization. It also
discusses the unique roll of the southern jewish community.
Both books move beyond slavery to events that have happened within the
last 50 years and still shape our society.
