[Dems2008] Re: Loving v. Virginia (1967)

Mark:

  • sensibly and wisely put
  • I believe earnestly that in my lifetime (and I'm in my 60s) same-gender marriage will be commonplace; call me a dreamer
  • You are correct:  first things first -- even if the religious right retains its monopoly on the term "marriage," one by one we have to extend to same-gender unions the rights enjoyed by hetero couples
  • whether a president will move public sentiment, or whether public sentiment must shift first is a difficult question, but one by one folks who can should stand up and be heard, and one by one rights of marriage should be extended to whatever we call the identical legal obligation covering gays and lesbians
