[Dems2008] The subjectivity of taxes

  • There is no objective way to debate tax rates or whether we are paying too much, too little, or just the right amount
  • The inquiry is always a subjective one
  • So I don't argue for my personal view; I just share my personal view; and it is just this --
  • While I suppose one could argue that I'm one of those "self-made" types, I don't buy it.   Some combination of luck, good fortune, living in a great free capitalist country, and other advantages have allowed me to get what I've gotten.
  • So in my view I do NOT begrudge this country taking a substantial share of that back.   I would not trade (and cannot put a value on) the advantages that being in this country have quite accidentally bestowed on me.   For that I can only be thankful.
  • I'm not being held here against my will.   If I think the u.S. taxes me too heavily, I'm free to leave anytime I want.
  • But I choose to stay here, and so, from my point of view, I'm only willing to complain about HOW the govt SPENDS what it takes; not to argue about WHAT it takes.
