Subject: [Dems2008] Alice Walker & Toni Morrison praise Senator Obama
"He is the man for this time"
AOL News - Alice Walker on Senator Barack obama:
ATLANTA (AP) - Pulitzer prize-winning author and outspoken feminist Alice Walker says she is supporting Sen. Barack Obama for president because she believes he can take the country in the right direction.
"I think he's just the right person for now," Walker said in an interview with The Associated Press before a public reading at Emory University on Tuesday.
"I think we need a leader who can be very strong and forceful and at the same time capable of actually sitting with people wherever they are on the globe. We don't want leaders who are afraid of other people."
Walker, 64, a longtime activist who once worked at Gloria Steinem's Ms. magazine, didn't struggle over her choice in the Democratic Party's nomination battle, even though Obama's competition is Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
She called the idea that feminists must support every female candidate "the old way of thinking" and counterproductive.
Walker joins another black Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, Toni Morrison, in backing Obama. Morrison, who once labeled President Clinton as the "first black president," surprised pundits in January by endorsing his wife's competition.
ABC News - Toni Morrison writes a letter to Senator Barack Obama praising him by saying:
"In thinking carefully about the strengths of the candidates, I stunned myself when I came to the following conclusion: that in addition to keen intelligence, integrity and a rare authenticity, you exhibit something that has nothing to do with age, experience, race or gender and something I don't see in other candidates. That something is a creative imagination which coupled with brilliance equals wisdom.
"Our future is ripe, outrageously rich in its possibilities. Yet unleashing the glory of that future will require a difficult labor, and some may be so frightened of its birth they will refuse to abandon their nostalgia for the womb.
"There have been a few president leaders in our past, but you are the man for this time," she concludes.
