Re: [Dems2008] McCain vs. Hillary : the longer view

  • Could I vote for McCain? Certainly not.  Would I vote for a candidate who (together with her husband) lacks anything resembling a moral compass? NO WAY.   I would tolerate another four years of the GOP, knowing that there is a larger lesson to be learned and achieved, and knowing that even at the level that McCain would operate, we'll survive."

Further involvement means deeper debts that the 1 trillion dollar one we have right now, continuation of the erosion of our civil liberties via patriot act, evesdropping bill, etc, further exploitation by the oil companies, and so forth.  we will survive- yes we will but at what level?  Will we even have the right to protest at that time?

Subject: [Dems2008] McCain vs. Hillary : the longer view

    • Bush/Cheney, of course, are abysmal; probably the worst administration we've seen in 90 years in this country.  It would take a mighty important reason to want any direct or indirect continuation of same
    • McCain is an idiot, only slightly better than what we have today in Bush/Cheney
    • But I have to step back:   through our Peace Corps daughter's now-two-year experience in a developing country, and our own travels thru Central America and South America, we conclude that on our very worst day, in our very worst week, at the worst of bush/Cheney, we are freer, more prosperous, better off in every way than 95% of the world's people on their very best day.   Corruption, inefficiencies, etc., etc. are so bad elsewhere that if our government were a tenth what it is today, we would still be better off than almost all other persons on this planet.
    • So, with that frame  of reference, it's certainly not the end of the world if we get McCain this November.   By no means desirable, but not the worst fate that can befall us.
    • And, so, if there are larger goals or purposes that we can achieve by tolerating another four years of the GOP, then maybe there are circumstances in which McCain would be someone we could just hold our noses about and suffer thru for another four years.
    • TO ME (and everyone has his or her own take on these things), if Hillary is the nominee this summer, there IS in fact a higher purpose and a greater goal that would be served by her defeat, NAMELY, it might send an historic message that deceit and racism will not permit one to gain either a nomination or an election in the general, that we are not going to tolerate the sort of distortion, misbehavior, divisiveness, and unprincipled behavior that we get from Bill and Hillary.
    • Could I vote for McCain? Certainly not.  Would I vote for a candidate who (together with her husband) lacks anything resembling a moral compass? NO WAY.   I would tolerate another four years of the GOP, knowing that there is a larger lesson to be learned and achieved, and knowing that even at the level that McCain would operate, we'll survive.
    • Sometimes there are just longer-term goals and purposes to be achieved than simply the election of a woman to be president.  Much as I hope dearly that in my lifetime we will see it commonplace for a woman to run for president, and be elected president, we don't have to stoop to the level of just accepting any miscreant just because she's female.
