Re: [Dems2008] Re: 1968?

Robert Kennedy should have stayed out of the running and backed
McCarthy. He came into the race after McCarthy had already
gotten into it and had the following of most of the young people.
In fact in Evan Thomas's biography of Kennedy he mentions
that Kennedy was impressed by the passion of the young
Dems devotion to McCarthy.  But it was the convention itself
that destroyed the chance of a Democratic win in the election.
It was the riots in the streets of Chicago, The actions of
Richard Daily and his machine and the disgusting behavior
of the Chicago police department.--  Duh--right back to you
--And also Robert Kennedy could be ruthless. that
comes out in Talbot's book "Brothers" as well as Doris
Kearns Goodwin's book "The Fitzgeralds and The Kennedys.
There is no question about it the Kennedys were all a
ruthless bunch Big Daddy taught them well.  Having said
that I think I would have liked them, they really did care
about the under dog.

The comment about RFK had to do with the Gene McCarthy vs. Bobby Kennedy
part of the campaign, between the New Hampshire primary and California
in first week of June 1968. LBJ announced he would not run on March
31, Kennedy was assassinated June 4. Yes, of course, he was dead when
the convention occurred. Duh!!!
