Somehow my pun response to someones comment is being tagged on to the
statements that picking on a state is offensive.

I agree picking on a state is offensive (when it is not a very funny
joke.)

It arrives me of my travels in Minnesota. I was driving a highway that
looked more like a narrow residential road along a lake side. A bit
lost, I asked a local, "How do I get to the other side of lake?", he
responded, "You are on the other side of the lake, Mister".
