a moment. In the presidential election of 1800 (think for a moment
about exactly when this country was founded), Jefferson and Burr wound
up in a tie, and after 35 ballots in the House of Reps, they were still
tied. I quote from "Don't Know Much About History", by Kenneth C. Davis:
"The campaign produced a torrent of slurs and abuses from both sides.
And newspapers loyal to either party were filled with crude rumors of
sexual philandering by both Adams and Jefferson."
"The crisis was real, and some historians believe that civil war over
this election was not only possible but likely."
Jefferson was elected, finally and took the oath of office on March 4, 1801.
"This electoral crisis marked a triumph of level heads in both parties,
who put the orderly succession and continuity of government first."
And you think we've got a disaster on our hands in 2008???? Get Real.
