Actually it's not excuse or a "misspeak"... The University of Chicago confirmed he was a "professor"...

Saying he was a "law professor" when actually he was a "lecturer at the Law school"... Not a big difference there... I'll tell you I have no idea which of my "professors" in college were actually professors and which weren't...

His parents told him that it was civil rights events like Selma... not necessarily Selma itself.

Your nitpicking is very minor compared to dodging sniper fire... It's equivalent of someone accusing you of robbing a bank then you coming back saying "Well he stole a candy bar!"
