[Dems2008] The debate, Ayers, the Weather underground, capital gains tax rates

from wsj online tonight:

Sen. Obama let loose and pointed to his rival's disingenuousness. President Clinton, he said, had pardoned two members of Weather Underground. And he said that his ability to take Sen. Clinton's political punches should reassure Democratic voters that he would withstand Republican attacks in the fall.

When the debate finally turned to policy, the candidates stuck to their standard stump lines. After 21 debates since the presidential campaign began 15 months ago, the candidates have both developed battle-tested responses to questions ranging from the Iraq war to tax policies.

The most substantive policy debates came over Sen. Obama's proposal to nearly double the capital-gains tax rate from 15% as a way to pay for $85 billion annually in middle-class tax relief. Sen. Clinton said she would not raise the tax on investors to more than 20%, if she raised it at all.

She touted her plan to freeze interest rates on subprime mortgages and create a moratorium on home foreclosures as a way to stem the housing crisis and critiqued Sen. Obama for proposing to increase the amount of income that is taxed to provide monthly Social Security benefits.
