[Dems2008] OT: World Autism Awareness Day

Yes it's off topic, but you know what... I'm the moderator.

Today is World Autism Awareness Day.

1 in 150 Children today are on the autism spectrum. For boys the number is 1 in 94. More children will be diagnosed this year with autism than diabetes, AIDS and cancer -- combined.

There is no known cause. There is no cure.

Autism can range from Aspergers Syndrome and "high-function autism" where kids appear to just be "quirky" to severe autism where the person is unable to communicate.

No treatments work for all autistic people, but early detection and treatment holds the best hope.

My daughter was diagnosed with "severe" autism when she was 2. Today through a LOT of work she attends public school and is in the 2nd grade. She reads, does her math and regularly aces her spelling test.

Please, take some time today and be aware... (and all month as this is Autism Awareness Month in the US)...
