individual...it isn't written in blood is it? Isn't the actual vote
done at the convention? Otherwise...why do they even have a
convention...if it is all done ahead of time?? If it is done at the
convention...they can change their mind can't they?

The convention is now less about nominating the president or even
setting up the party rules. Now conventions serve four major purposes.
1) set up the party platform - this seems symbolic but it actually
serves a purpose of allowing minorities within the party to have a
voice and it is one of those bring everyone together moments.
Unfortunately it happens before the vote so this could be a horrible
cat fight where people walk out.
2) sets the key note speaker. Usually an up an comer who has a chance
to catch the party eye, sometimes an older steadying influence. But
the major thing is the speaker slots. Almost everyone who has gone on
to a career of note in the Democratic party cut their teeth on these
speeches. Also this is another chance to build bridges. Again in this
convention the only bridge built will be like the bridge of the river
kwai.
3) Introduce the president and have his or her big day. I plan to be
drunk that Thursday
4) pick a vp and have lots of waving cheering and happy faces. I plan
to be drunk that Friday too.
