70% of our population will believe anything.

Nobody joins a cult. You join a self-help group, a religious
movement, a political organization. They change so gradually, by the
time you realize you're entrapped - and almost everybody does - you
can't figure a safe way back out.
Jim Jones was not some self-proclaimed "prophet" or fringe religious
leader. He was an ordained minister of the Disciples of Christ, a
respected mainline denomination. At one point his congregation
numbered 8,000. It was composed largely of African Americans.
Jim Jones's, Rev. Wright, Warren Steed Jeffs, and Obama have the
ability to manipulate the mines of their followers demonstrates the
kind of power later echoed by other self-destructive cults. But while
Heaven's Gate seemed a little loony from the start, what with the
space aliens and all, the Peoples Temple represented itself
beautifully to outsiders.
Jones became an ordained minister of the Disciples of Christ
denomination in the 1950s. He established a congregation in
Indianapolis and named it the Peoples Temple. He became known as a
champion of African-Americans.

More than 70 percent of the people who died at Jonestown were African
American. "Rev. Jones is regarded among government officials, civic
and religious leaders, and particularly the black community and
working class people, with utter respect..." Looking at the
transcripts, we can tell the worship services in many ways resembled
the black worship style. There was call and response, the length of
the service, the music and his message of social justice and racial
equality. He promised them their lives would get better.

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center published the following
statements of Warren Steed Jeffs:

"The black race is the people through which the devil has always been
able to bring evil unto the earth."

"[Cain was] cursed with a black skin and he is the father of the
Negro people. He has great power, can appear and disappear. He is
used by the devil, as a mortal man, to do great evils."

"Today you can see a black man with a white woman, et cetera. A great
evil has happened on this land because the devil knows that if all
the people have Negro blood, there will be nobody worthy to have the
priesthood."

"If you marry a person who has connections with a Negro, you would
become cursed."

Now, would you vote for a someone running for President if they
attended Warren's congregation for 20 years and said Warren waslike
an uncle and mentor? I think we would if he denounced some of
Warren's statements, don't you? Remember, some of his statements
could have been taken out of context and we have to be fair, we
didn't hear the entire sermon.

Many religious scholars are reluctant to describe Peoples Temple as
a cult. "That's a term we use to describe religious groups we don't
like" and it's so loaded with negative connotations. If we label
something a cult, then we don't make any effort to understand
it. "Don't drink the Kool-Aid." This has come to mean, "Don't trust
any group you find to be a little on the kooky side."

While you may not be for Obama because you are "caught up in the
concept",
