[Dems2008] Re: What is a Democrat?

Democrat: A person who believes that the social compact exists, and
that the members of that compact created government as a tool to blend
the interests of all involved in that social compact, and who believes
that that government can be engineered to increase BOTH the greater
good and the well-being of those least able to fend for themselves.

A Democrat can be a conservative, a liberal, a progressive.....and can
be one or the other on economic issues and social issues without being
tied ideologically to any standard script. A Democrat can be a free-
trader or a protectionist, an economic conservative or a populist
because, above all, the chief characteristics of "Democrats" as a group
is their diversity and open-mindedness.
