Re: [Dems2008] All Is Well

Personally I htink Israel's only friend is Israel...

Perfect example is the bombing of the USS Liberty...

I don't believe Turkey is a friend to Israel, In fact I believe
Turkey is no one but Turkeys friend.  Sorry to sound so
nasty but it has been over 100 years and they still have not
taken responsibility for the genocide of the Armenians they
are still trying to blame the victims. In 1982  during a
conference on the holocaust The Turkish government
objected to the bringing up of the Armenian slaughter
and so to protect Turkish-Israel relations it was left out,
causing Elie Wiesel to withdraw from the conference.

As for Bill Clinton and Israel, Remember Clinton and Ehud
Barak worked together to bring peace to the Middle East.
Barak startled the world by offering the Palestinians
between 94 and 96 percent of the West Bank. In
addition, Barak offered the Palestinians a state with
Arab Jerusalem as its capital and complete control
over  East Jerusalem and the Arab Ouarter of the
old city.  Off hand I can't remember but there were
other things as well.  Whatever Arafat rejected the
Barak proposal making it clear that he would never
surrender the right of more than 4 million Palestinians
to return to Israel.

Oh  I could go on but what's the point we will never see
things through the same eyes, I guess you and I prove
the old saying, no two Jews see things the same.

As a supporter of Israel I don't buy into the notion that our policy of
the last sixteen years has
helped that much:

- We looked the other way while Pakistan and North Korea have let
nuclear technology go into mass
circulation, this is bad for Israel. And if we're talking about nuclear
proliferation our
relations  with Russia aren't helping.

- Thanks to the war in Iraq we've empowered Iran, which in return has
empowered Hezbollah in
Lebanon. And our support of the 2006 Lebanon War was a bad move, and
didn't bring those soldiers
back. And by alienating Syria we've driven them to be allies of Iran.

- The war in Iraq has strained our relations with Turkey, a nation that
has been quietly
supportive  of Israel. I support the rights of the Kurds and feel
strongly that what happened to
Armenians was genocide, but that said we need to repair our relations
with Turkey as they are a
living bridge between so many cultures and nations.

- By supporting elections in Palestine without any stability, the Bush
administration pretty much
put Hamas into a position of real power (something they never could
have done on their own).

- Both the Clinton and Bush administrations never tried to bring the
Palestinians and the Israelis
together for negotiations until the very end of their administrations
when they had the least
amount of leverage to be taken seriously (and thus produced no real
results). It's a depressing
day when on realizes that Egypt has conducted more useful
behind-the-scenes negotiations with the
Palestinians than the United States.

- Just like you can be a patriotic American and not be a Republican,
you can be a supporter of
Israel and not be a Likudnik. Through poor policy choices the
neoconservatives have empowered
Hamas and Hezbollah, simply put if you support Israel you can't vote
for McCain and have to object
to Clinton's vote for the war in Iraq and giving a green light to go to
war with Iran.

In short: It's not enough to wave a flag or wear a lapel pin, the loss
of American credibility on
the international stage has hurt Israel and Barack Obama is our best
hope to turn that around. A
weak America is bad news for Israel...
