The point Barack was making in his speech was that we all say things among our own that we know not to say in public or in mixed company.  This is particularly true of an older generation and fortunately, it is less true now. And that was his other point: things can change and people can change. 

He was also pointing out that all people, from all different backgrounds, have their learned biases.  In other posts, people have mentioned the biases against gay & lesbian people, overweight people, short people etc.

If we cannot confront bigotry openly, then we cannot change it or heal the wounds that are left in its wake.
