Obama pays $694,000 to buy superdelegate votes

February 14, 2008

In a new study released today by the Center for Responsive Politics, Barack Obama has spent way more money buying superdelgate votes than Hillary Clinton.Barack Obama has spent $694,000 on the superdelegates and Hillary Clinton has spent $195,500.
ABC News Reports:The study found that Obama has sent more than $694,000 from either his campaign account or his political action committee to superdelegates -- the members of Congress, governors, and other party leaders who receive automatic votes at the Democratic National Convention.About 40 percent of the elected officials who have endorsed Obama have received campaign contributions from him, the center reports. Those superdelegates have received a total of $228,000 from him.By contrast, Clinton sent out only $195,500 to superdelegates, and only 12 percent of her superdelegates received money from her for their campaigns, according to the report. It was my understanding that Barack Obama was trying to get away from politics as usual, wanting to bring about change in Washington. This, to me, just seems to be more of the same old same old.

"Mr. Clinton's charitable foundation received its own windfall: a $31.3 million donation from Mr. Giustra that had remained a secret until he acknowledged it last month. The gift, combined with Mr. Giustra's more recent and public pledge to give the William J. Clinton Foundation an additional $100 million, secured Mr. Giustra a place in Mr. Clinton's inner circle, an exclusive club of wealthy entrepreneurs in which friendship with the former president has its privileges."
The Wall Street Journal has also reported that Bill Clinton arranged for Giustra to meet Alvaro Uribe, the president of Colombia. And, lo and behold, a company Giustra's investment firm was advising acquired Colombian oil fields.

This connection raises many questions, $131.3 million buys a lot of direct access to the White House, I assume that Mr. Giustra expects some return on his investment.
Hillary Clinton claims the experience as First Lady and that she had a lot of influence in policy, one has to wonder how much influence W. J. Clinton will have as the husband of the President?
Hillary Clinton claims to be against a Free Trade Agreement with Colombia but at the same time her husband is working to have one enacted, what are we supposed to believe?  She also claimed that she was against NAFTA from the beginning and now we now that it was a flat out lie.
Do you agree that these concerns need to be addressed by the Hillary Clinton campaign? Or, the basic question, should the people be concerned?  Specially in Pennsylvania and the other states which still have upcoming primaries?
Finally, so Mark Penn is out, well, sort of...
