[Dems2008] Re: ENOUGH OF THIS!

Suzi

When one thinks about things like racism or sexism, you have to think about there being at least two levels to the inquiry.

Each of us is socialized or conditioned (whether by nurture or otherwise) to feel and think in certain ways.   Being raised in a deeply racist community, family or other environment can give one some ingrained attitudes of which the person may not even be consciously aware.

And, although depending on our abilities, we can to some degree or another CONTROL how that conditioning manifests itself in actual speech or conduct, I'm not sure those basic instincts can ever fully leave us.  We are each a product of all we've experienced (and more), and I'm not sure we can at that subconscious level do much more than just try to aggregate COUNTER-tendencies.

But, at  another level, there is our overt conduct and speech and actions over which we have some control, and about which we can make individual choices.  That level, it seems to me, is where blame or credit should be placed when racist or sexist conduct or speech emerges.

As to Ferrarro, I don't know whether (this is my wife's theory on the matter) that she was not just showing her underlying conditioning and attitudes in a moment where she let her guard down, or whether she was making an overt choice to assist the Clintons in a racist  Pennsylvania strategy.

I suppose the answer is most likely BOTH. __._,_.___
