[Dems2008] Re: Loving v. Virginia (1967)

Gabrielle, fair questions:

I think it's largely TWO things:

  • I saw a list one time, and I recollect that it was something like 185 different rights that are inherent in marriages as recognized by most states, and of course, the list of rights and entitlements could change any time.   The simplest guarantee of similar rights is to use the same term "marriage"
  • Second, use of different terms -- while it may seem like just a term -- perpetuates the SEPARATION that represents the inequality of dignity.

I am just trying to understand, I don't want to hurt anyone. Honestly, if my hubby and I could have all the trappings of marriage without the piece of paper (and the church not having a cow), believe me we would have just lived together and we did for awhile. But then we wanted to adopt a child (I can't have one) and the whole "you have to be married" thing came about. I honestly don't see why so much importance is put on a piece of paper. I also don't see why you can't get married. I would have thought that as a society we are past that. I agree with Obama, the federal government should not be setting about making a definition of marriage as a man and a woman.
