First off late term abortion is almost unheard of and
used only in matters of life and death but it has been
used by the Christian right and it seems to work.
Second--The death penalty which is no longer in
existence in the rest of the so called civilized world,
only puts the state in the same category as the
killer being put to death, aside from the fact that
it is bias and there are occasions when innocent
men and women have been put to death.---Nan

I never understood opposing capital punishment on moral principle but
seeing late term abortion as OK. Personally, I am mildly pro-life
(but in favor of choice in situations like rape, incest, saving the
life of the mother and fetal deformity) and would rather do things
like improve the safety net for expectant mothers to reduce abortion
than pass more laws. At some point, we have to stop fighting over
issues like abortion and gay rights and try to find some common
ground. The party that can win over the social middle (which is quiet
but definitely exists) gets the prize.
As for capital punishment, it doesn't deter crimes of passion but
certainly does reduce recidivism. I see it as different from taking
an innocent life but rather removing a danger to society.
Bill Bradley pointed out recently that even most blue state voters
still favor capital punishment. I think most voters are still midly
pro-choice but not as pro-choice as many of our party activists are.
The mainstream is somewhere between the folks screaming on both sides
of the issue. I find myself leaning pro-choice after listening to
some of the nuttier pro-life types who want women to be forced to
carry the child of a rapist and go the other direction when I hear
the rabid pro-choicers who think that a fetus has no value or rights
whatsoever.
