One week doesn't matter!...
A rule is a rule... if you go and start changing the rules in the middle of the game it's not fair to anyone...
Now you can certainly argue that the punishment of stripping all the delegates was too severe... but that's something that should have been argued last summer...
If your teenager asked you if she could spend the night at her friend's house on Thursday night and you said "No, you can't on a weeknight, but you can on Friday..." and she went and spent the night at her friend's house anyways... Would you let her get away with saying "Well it was just 1 night early..." Of course not.

if Gov Dean's 50 state strategy was working, it wouldn't have come down to this. As far as the matter goes, the DNC is just as pig headed as our DEC In florida to let a matter of one week create this mess. As far as my other points, I notice this a basic repeat of one of your prior emails and not an answer to my subsequent letter.

Florida didn't have to have the primary decide their delegates... Florida Democrats could have held their own primary or their own caucuses at a later time and had the 1/29 primary be a non-binding primary.
The fact of the matter is that the Florida Democratc Central Committee voted UNANIMOUSLY to go ahead and hold the binding primary on 1/29 even though they knew that their delegates would be stripped.
If Florida had said to the DNC, "Look I know you said we can't have our primary before 2/5, but the Republican Legislature moved it to 1/29... we'd like to have a caucus on a later date but we're not sure we can afford it... can you help us out?" If I were Dean I would have said "I understand, let's see if we can help you out there..."
But no. They said "Screw it... we're holding it anyways. Yeah we're going to lose our delegates, but we're doing it on 1/29 anyways."
They had plenty of opportunity to make other plans, they chose not to.

Let us be rational about the matter. I can't speak for Michigan; I live in Florida. The story I heard was that the bill that had us voting on Jan 29th had two parts to the bill- one the election date and the other a provision for new voting machines that included a paper trail. The republican majority in both houses refused to separate the bills and if they wanted new machines the who bill would have to be passed as such. An effort was made but was futile since the overwhelming majority of both houses were republicans. The republicans knew that this would be a good way to embarrass Democrats as well. by their RNC only cutting their delegates in half, they could divert people's attention from their attempts to disenfranchise people who wouldn't vote for them by pointing out how Democrats could disenfranchise their voters. Think for a moment, the difference in time was only a week- Feb 5th. To penalize florida this way for just the matter of one week's difference, this was extreme. and the DNC fell into their trap. Other ramifications- we are getting info on the candidates through debates nationally conducted, opinions from Rush and Glenn Beck and the few of us that get Air America are really lucky. Do we really know the candidates. I can't say that I do.

Why should anyone be concerned other than those Democrats who live, and
want to vote, in Michigan and Florida? They have plenty of time to do a
caucus thing, or even arrange to pay for a private Democratic primary
do-over. The insanity was breaking the rules in the first place and
expecting not to have consequences attach. If you forbid your 4 year
old child to play with matches, do you then say "oh, that's ok" when the
child does the forbidden thing? If so, start saving your money for
those pesky ole defense lawyers.
