candidate will be drummed out if s/he dares utter "pessimism," but
the simple fact of the matter is that our best days are behind us.
Where once there were two or three powers in the world with the
wealth, education, and infrastructure to lead the world economically,
we are fast approaching the simple fact that there are about a DOZEN
candidates for that role in the next few years. Lots of goods that
required skill labor that existed in just a couple countries ten or
twenty years ago is now machinable with ever more sophisticated (and
available) technology. And other countries are producing well-
educated engineers, scientists, mathematicians, and other
professionals in increasingly rising numbers.
Not just India and China, but Brazil, Russia, and others. We
continue to cling to a standard of living that depends on there being
much less competition for "producer" status than was the case ten or
twenty years ago; oil wealth has buttressed a number of other
economies; the ease with which intellectual capital can cross borders
has added to the acceleration of development in other countries.
The irony of our current state of the art bigotry and intolerance is
that within just a few years there will be other developing and
emerged economies to which illegal immigrants will go instead of hte
U.S............and we may be wishing we had them here.
Be careful what you wish for.
