are. China, for example, already recognizes that it will have enormous
needs for energy and food; and they are going around the world telling
natural resource-rich countries, "Say, you need a new dam built, or a
new city built. We'll do it for you; just give us a monopoly on your
oil exports for the next forty years, and we will give you all the help
with infrastructure that you need."
We've long theorized about shortages in food causing social unrest in
the world, and among countries; now we are probably on the eve of the
same sort of HYPER=competition for energy and natural resources.
Bush's refusal to be a good neighbor with the rest of hte world has
not only short-term costs; it has long-term costs to us. Hillary and
Barack are on the right track in saying that they will strengthen ties
with other nations. it is not only the right thing to do; it may be
essential to the survival of our standard of living, such as it remains.
