I think there are several reasons. First of all there are precious few
whose hands are clean... INCLUDING the public itself. The fact is this
country supported going to war and democrats as well as republicans
lined up at the trough of public opinion. We can blame this war on W
all we want but the fact is these troops went with the publics
blessing. So who on earth is going to stand up and say your boys and
girls are dying for nothing. Its political suicide.
But just as we rushed to get any complete with banners waving... and
with the support of the country and we reaped a disaster, doing the
reverse is just as wrought with peril. Anything other than a
controlled withdraw, following an extensive study of the matter and
preparing for it, something the military I am sure has not done yet
and might take several months to complete (maybe longer), will put our
troops in harms way. Yes even more so than they are now. I agree the
situation is dire... I agree that we do need to withdraw as soon as
possible. But there is a HUGE difference between ASAP and NOW. Now is
not responsible. Now is acting out on emotion rather than rational
thought. We have had enough of now, because it does not work. Thats
the problem. If whomever gets the Nod operates on a NOW or even a six
month time table the inevitable delays and glitches and logistical
nightmares will bring his or her administration to a screeching halt.
Yes the troops are priority one, along with a dire economic situation
which is priority one, Russia pointing nuclear missiles at Poland is
priority one, fixing the broken government is priority one. What needs
to be expressed is that this party will be led by someone who is calm
and rational, who recognizes reality and can deal with it. The
Republicans need to be shown as being rash and dangerous and detached
from all things factual not fictional. Saying we should withdraw now
is not rational, practical, or even possible; anything else we are
told is more of the same crap we have been dining on for eight years.
